Life with Father

Hi, everyone! Hope the weekend is off to a great start -- regardless of all the cold and snow.

Tonight I'm  here to share a card for the current Shopping Our Stash Big Screen challenge. For this challenge, we have been asked to make a card inspired by a movie.

Since the Operation Write Home deadline for Father's Day cards is the end of April, I'm beginning to make some dad cards. I found myself looking at a Tim Holtz collage paper pad, a roll of Ribbon Boutique mustache ribbon, and some Stampin' Up! Guy Greeting stamps -- all of which have a vintage dad feel to them. So, I used these as my materials for a Life-with-Father-inspired card.

The paper pad is actually an 8" by 8" pad. Some of the papers have images that are better suited for scrapbooking than card making -- including the paper I chose for my background. I was just so drawn to the grandfatherly gent pictured on the paper, that I had to use him. So, I cut the paper to include my gent, and then designed and positioned the sentiment layer to complement the background layer. I thought about using only two brads -- positioned in diagonal corners -- on the sentiment panel. But, the bottom brad got lost next to the ribbon and decided to go with brads in all four corners.

I'm actually crafting from the road -- sans a heat gun, embossing tools, or a die cut machine. But, I'm hoping the layers, brads, and jute ribbon are enough to qualify this for the Simon Says Stamp Wednesday blog challenge to make a card with texture.

Did you watch the Emmy awards? Well, I did... while stamping sentiments. Today's card features a classic palette, a basic design, and a few of those stamped sentiments. Think the result is a set of classically masculine cards that received hubby's seal of approval. Hoping our heroes will approve as well.  :)

Post two of three in one day! Amazing, huh?!

The card below is for one of two current Shopping Our Stash challenges. This challenge calls for a card featuring a wood element, a wooden ship image, or both. So, what the heck... Let's do both.

I was really thrilled with the way the image stamped on the birch. Since I typically make cards for OWH, this was a new technique for me!

This is going to be a birthday card for hubby. He loves patriotic colors. And, while neither of us really are boaters, we both love beach vacations. Close enough for me -- especially since I was really stumped for a card for him this year. :)

A Solitary Bird

The second card started with the embossing folder for a masculine feel. Then, it kind of evolved from there. I had originally intended to add a Miss You sentiment, but liked the card without it.

{Ovals}, Insects, and TPC Studio sentiments

Boy, what a pretty day here. A little brisk, but sunny and warm enough for a nice walk.  :)

I have two very different cards for two different challenges. What the cards share is that they feature a sentiment from my first set of stamp sentiments. Still love this font.

Card 1: CFC #130 to Make a Project featuring Ovals

After mulling this over for a week, I decided to go in a rather unexpected direction. I used ovals to create this little tulip peeking out from its vase. 

Love the simplicity of the palette and the flower's design. Also really like the texture of the white cardstock. I originally thought about using different embossing folders to create different, contrasting textures. But, chose to stay with the texture of the paper for the flower and vase -- popping the whole thing against the taupe background.

• Step 1: Cut an oval for the vase. Then use a circle punch to cut out the top and a paper cutter to make the vase's flat bottom.
• Step 2: Cut out a "rounder" oval for the tulip head, cutting out a section of the oval to create the appearance of the tulip head.
• Step 3: Use my Staedler bendable ruler to draw a curved section that I cut out to form the stem.
• Step 4: Use the piece punched out from the first oval as one leaf. Then cut another oval, punching out a section for the second leaf.
• Step 5: Piece together the tulip and vase.
• Step 6: Repeat Steps 1-5 to form a second tulip from the taupe cardstock for the inside of the card.

So, I hope this isn't too far out of the box to meet CFC's challenge criteria. But, I have to say, I'm really pleased with the way this little card turned out.  And, maybe... just maybe... I'm getting the hand of this CAS thing.  :)

Card 2: ODBD April Challenge

Our Daily Bread Design is continuing its generous support of Operation Write Home. Thanks so much, ODBD! This month's challenge is to make a card featuring an insect, or two, ... or eleven. :)

Since OWH is always in need of Missing You cards, that seemed like the perfect sentiment for the card below.

T is for Thanks -- UPDATED

Hi, everyone.

Don't know about your neck of the woods, but it's snowing here.... again. Beginning to think this winter is never going to end. And, I'm sure the scale will show just how brutal the weather has been when I go to the doctor's office this week. LOL... but I probably won't be laughing on Wednesday.  :)

Card 1: T is for Thanks

When I first say this Stampin' Up background stamp, I immediately started thinking about all the letters and words I could make for OWH: F is for FRIEND, P is for PATRIOT, H is for HERO, S is for SMILE, H is for HELLO, M is for MISS YOU...  Well, guess you get the idea.

So, here's the first of what could be a series of cards. This thank you card was made for this month's ODBD challenge.

To create the sentiment, I made a 2 by 2 table in a Word doc. Next,  I merged the cells in the first column. Then, I played with fonts, font sizes, and text placement in each cell. The strip behind the sentiment was fussy cut from a piece of designer paper.

Card 2: A Father is...

The card below was made for this week's OWH Midweek Throwdown using the same designer paper.

Okay, let me start by saying that I really, really like this card. When I read the challenge was to use teal or turquoise, I immediately thought of the papers in this collection. And, since I wanted to use this quote, I knew the photo theme of the paper would be perfect.

When I started playing around with the papers, I ended up using the turquoise/teal as the paper that frames and pops the elements -- using the browns, blacks, and tans to complement the fatherly sentiment. But, when I revisited the post to get the link to the challenge, I saw that turquoise/teal was supposed to be the MAIN color. OOPS! Sorry about that, Allison. Hope you'll accept this little card anyway.

Card 3: A Patriotic Thanks

The card below was inspired by today's OWH Sketch.

Choosing different patterns to go next to one another in vertical strips is not a strong suit. So, I used one pattern, alternating the direction of the stars/arrows. Moreover, I went with just two widths and a symmetric layout.

But, I was more creative when it came to the ribbon treatment. The patriotic ribbon, which was red, white, and blue, was sponged in Distress Ink antique linen.

Soooo looking forward to the Oscars! Even took a vacation day for tomorrow for a celebratory mini movie marathon.  :)

Say It with Tags -- or Hexagons

Hope everybody is plowed out by now. Wow, what a winter!

I have two cards to share. But, before I do that, a quick reminder that Bobbi's Olympic-sized challenge is going on at W2SB. You have until the 21st to link up a wonderfully "colourful" card.

Card #1: Say It with Tags... and Flowers

I first came up with this layout for a thank you card a month or so ago. I really like the triple tag effect. And, I also like that the flowers have the same top layer of paper as the background paper. It is a nice way to fill space without taking away from the focal point.

I came across a pack of this 2-sided paper at Big Lots -- twenty-five 12 x12 American Craft sheets for $3.00! When I saw it, I immediately thought Mother's Day cards. But, in keeping with Sandy's request to make cards with longer shelf lives, I went with the "For Mom, With Love" sentiment.

 

Card #2: Say It with Hexagons.. and a Banner

The card above was inspired by the OWH Midweek Throwdown to make a card featuring hexagons. This is one of those rare occasions when hubby likes a card more than I do. I'm struggling with this not having a strong focal point -- feeling like the hexagons and banner are pulling at each other. But, I like the arrangement of the hexagons, and the palette. A gray, yellow, black, and white palette is an atypical choice for me. I need to keep in mind how much I like the papers in this collection. :)

Can't believe February is only 6 days old. What I wouldn't give for a spring day... Thank heaven for this menopause room and this card-making addiction hobby of mine.  :)
