W2SB #19: A Friend with Chocolate

Hi, everyone! It's time for another Words 2 Scrap By challenge! And, it's a challenge that all of us chocolate lovers are sure to enjoy.   :)

Before I get to the inspiration behind this challenge and my card, I'd like to thank everyone who played along with our It's a Man's World challenge. We were thrilled to see so many amazing cards and projects! And, while I'm at it, let me give a huge shout out to Annie for hosting such a fun challenge and offering such a generous prize.  :)

The Story Behind our July W2SB Challenge

There seem to be several Chocolate Days interspersed throughout the calendar year. For this month's challenge, we have chosen to celebrate the July 7 Chocolate Day. And, when I think of crafting to a chocolate theme, that adorable Inkadinkado kid quote "All You Need in Life is a Friend with Chocolate" comes to mind.

This little kid quote always reminds me of my friend Susan. Susan and I started out as colleagues who ate lunch together during our high school lunch period. During one of the lunches, Susan described the less-than-pleasant day she was having. When I went back to my room, I remembered that I had one of those fundraising candy bars in my desk. At the next class change, I went to deliver this bit of chocolate to Susan. When I gave the candy bar to Susan, her response was, "Is this still good?" -- to which I replied, "I didn't know chocolate could go bad. I don't think I've ever had chocolate last long enough for that to be a problem." As it turns out, Susan thought the candy bar was left over from a sale at the beginning of the school year while it had been purchased just recently during a fundraiser for a neighborhood school. More importantly, we both had a huge laugh about the situation and became the best of friends. So, when I hear the words A Friend with Chocolate, I think of Susan.  :)

Unfortunately, I don't have that adorable Inkadinkado stamp. Guess that means a little computer word processing is in order. Since this birthday card is going to a friend who works in a school, I chose to include little Sophie's name and age.   :)

W2SB: It's a Man's World!

June Challenge
June 1 - June 28

Hi, everyone! Can you believe that it's June 1 and time for another Words 2 Scrap By challenge?

Our inspiration words for this month are It's A Man's World. Depending on the man or men in your life, there are surely lots of ways to go with this one.

The card shown below is a Father's Day card for my father-in-law. (Yep, hubby actually let me make one for his dad this year. The trick was promising to fill most of the inside with a sentiment so that all hubby had to do was sign our names.)
But, I digress. Back to the card.

My father-in-law was a pretty good handyman back in the day. Hence, the tool theme of my card.  :)

I'm pretty proud of this card for a couple of reasons.

One Stamp = Three Images

• The embossing is so crisp. I used a teeny, tiny brush to remove extraneous powder before setting the images with my heat gun.
• The three tools were actually one stamp. I really didn't want to cut the stamp because I want the option to use it as is on future projects. So, I did some pretty careful masking to come up with the three separate tools.

Hope my father-in-law likes this card, because I had such fun making it for him.  :)

W2SB #17: Say Cheese

Hello, everyone! Happy May!

Can you believe May is here already?! I thought retirement might slow the passing of time. But, I would be wrong about that. 

W2SB #17: Say Cheese

 

In the Fall of 2013, when Bobbi and I were laying the foundation for Words 2 Scrap By and brainstorming ideas for each month's words, I found she prefers to take the road less traveled. For example, I was thinking we might go with something related to love or Valentine's Day for February. Bobbi, however, suggested we look towards the upcoming Olympics instead. Great idea!

 

Well, it turns out that May is the month of flowers, Mother's Day, graduations... and National Photography Day! And, what better words to celebrate National Photography Day than the expression, "Say Cheese!"   :)

 

My W2SB Card: Wish You Were Here!

 

I decided to create a post-card-like card for this challenge -- inspired by a photo of the island that's been on my crafting table for quite a while. Next, I had the thought of combining this actual photo with a cartoon-like beach critter.

The following design choices led to the creation of the card shown above.

• First, I  chose the orange paper from the beach bum collection as the base color for my card to complement the photo's colors. Then, I used yellow and blue papers from the collection to enhance the card's base color.
• Next, I chose to stamp my litter critter on red, envisioning the way it would pop off the blue.
• Then, I decided to use black for the focal point elements (the filmstrip die cut, the stamped critter, and the word bubble text).
• To add interest to the card -- without taking away from the focal point elements, I stamped the unadorned, uncolored beach scene in brown.
• "Wish You Were Here" was computer generated and printed on a 6" x 6" piece of designer paper and then cut out using a Stampin' Up! word bubble die. When, the text was not as centered in the speech bubble as I  had hoped, I added the stamped star on the right.
• "Greetings from Hilton Head Island" was also printed directly on dp. Black font was chosen to show up against the blue.
• To add a little sparkle that brought attention to the focal point while blending in with the base paper, I strategically added a few orange-ish sequins.
• All that said, my little critter was the most labor intensive part of the card. He is, after all, the star of this card!
• After stamping him on the red paper, I took great pains in fussy cutting him out.
• This fussy cutting put one of his little pinchers in great danger of tearing off. So, I added several coats of Glossy Accents.
• His stamped eyes really got lost in the cutting out process. So, I made him a little pair of eyes using the owl builder punch. After adhering the eye using drops of glue, I secured them to my little guy with an additional coat of Glossy Accents.
• Lastly, foam squares were used to support his claws/pincers and give him even more of a presence.

Think I'm going to link this little card up to Shopping Our Stash's Opposite Day Challenge to do something different. I very seldom use photos, and, I've never before used an actual photo with stamped images. The end result is something far more whimsical than my typical cards.   :)

This "tweet" Tim Holtz remnant rub image is framed by a leather label holder that I've had in my stash for who knows how long. I also pulled out my long-neglected crimper to achieve the texture on the bottom panel.

W2SB #16: The earth has music...

... for those that listen.

These are the words for our April Words 2 Scrap By challenge, which inspired the card below. They seem pretty appropriate for a month that celebrates Earth Day and Arbor Day.  :)

I have to confess that I love this month's words, but really struggled with my card. That said, I'm pretty pleased with the way it turned out. There are a few design elements worth mentioning.

• It may not show up well in the photo, the bottom dark gray strip is pleated. Combined with the vertical stripes added to the gold paper, I like the overall effect achieved.
• The twine was added for two reasons: 1) to help keep the pleats in place, 2) to add additional texture, and 3) to bring the "golden" color to the bottom of the card.
• The word strips were inspired by Tim's chit chat stickers. But, I couldn't find "note" in my chit chat stickers. So, I printed these myself on the gold paper. (And, I only had one small piece of paper to use... and was thrilled when it actually turned out okay!)
• At first, I didn't have any paper behind on my chit-chat-inspired words. But, I didn't feel they had a strong enough presence. So, I adhered them to black cardstock. Then they had too strong of a presence. Finally, I added the dark gray cardstock and, as Goldilocks would say, they felt just right.   :)

Words to Scrap By Challenge #15

Hi, everyone! I am excited about this month's Words 2 Scrap By challenge for two reasons.

• First of all, this month's words truly resonate: In like a lion, out like a lamb. Something tells me that I'm not the only one who will be happy for this winter's lion to lose its roar.   :)
• Secondly, I'm thrilled that Annie is back to host this month's challenge. I was excited when I heard she had decided to go with a weather-inspired direction.

After my initial excitement wore off, I was faced with the dilemma of what to do. I wanted a card that conveyed the joy that comes when the first rays of sunshine break through the typically gray skies of Ohio winters. But, I also wanted a card that would convey a more general feeling of hope and happiness that could be sent to Operation Write Home.

W2SB #14: Do Something Different

I loved Bobbi's idea for a Groundhog Day-inspired Words 2 Scrap By challenge to do something different. 

I decided to step outside of my card-making box. The W2SB tag line encourages projects other than cards. So, I decided to use this an opportunity to try out possible non-card craft show ideas: gift card holders, bookmarks, and ornament tags.  :)

Gift Card Holders

Gift card holders seemed like a good place to start -- something that everyone needs during the holiday season... and something much quicker to make than my typical cards. So, where did I go for ideas? Why, the Internet, of course!

I found a number of design possibilities and went with a basic trifold design my holders. For step-by-step instructions for the holders shown below, please click here.  :)

Bookmarks

Next on my list, was trying my hand at some bookmarks. Again, the Internet came to the rescue with several options. I decided to go with corner bookmarks, like the ones shown here.

I actually ended up changing the dimensions of my bookmarks from 2.25" by 2.25" to 2.125" by 2.125" so that I could get four from an 8.5" by 11" sheet of paper. My steps for scoring and cutting are shown below.

Step 1: Cut 4.25" square pieces of paper.
Score lines along the middle vertically and horizontally.
Then, score diagonally as shown.

Step 2: Mark the sections to be cut out with Xs.



Step 3: Cut out the marked sections.

Step 4: Fold the two triangle along the scored lines.
Step 5: Decorate as desired.  :)

Since the Santa bookmark turned out pretty well, I'm going to make up several different kinds -- including monsters like the ones shown in the link above -- for next year's craft show. While there might be a market for Santa gift card holders, there probably isn't quite as much of a demand for Santa bookmarks after Christmas.  :)

Ornament Gift Tags

I really do think folks like my cards. But, most folks don't seem to send old-fashioned cards nearly as much these days. Seems these cards have been replaced by those fun photo cards. I'm thinking that gift tag versions that double as ornaments might be the way to go. They could be just the answer to card-like keepsakes.

In keeping with the holiday theme, I've made two versions of a Santa ornament/tag. Not quite sure which I prefer. Think I'm leaning towards the second ornament/tag which was inspired by a paper-pieced Santa I found on Pinterest.

The First W2SB Challenge of 2015

So, can you believe Words 2 Scrap By is one year old today?! My sincerest thanks to all of you who made Year #1 possible.

The first W2SB challenge of 2015 is the social-media-inspired-hashtag #youchoosetheword(s). The seeds for my cards's hashtag were sown at last May's Simon Says Stamp event. When making a collage with Tim Holtz, we were instructed to use his chit chat words to create a phrase for our collage. The phrase Create the Life You Want popped in my head. When I retired in August, this phrase felt like the perfect motto for this next phase.

The card above  is actually a combination card and bookmark. The # strip on the right can be torn off and used as a bookmark. I used one of three settings on an American Craft trimmer to create the perforation.

And, what's a bookmark without a ribbon, right?! I used a yummy ribbon from Really Reasonable Ribbon, the sponsor of this month's W2SB prize to add a little sparkle to the top of the bookmark. Thanks again, Bonnie! And, what's a bookmark without a ribbon, right?!

In making the front of the card, I used each letter in the word CREATE to express six wishes -- guiding principles -- for this new phase of my life:

• Crafting,
• Reading,
• Exercising,
• Assisting,
• Traveling, and
• Embracing Friends.

Finally, hubby and I left this card for our mail carrier yesterday. TODAY is Patsy's very first day of retired life. We wish her all the best -- a life filled with all of her favorite things.  :)

Eat, Drink, and Be Merry!

Last month, I wrote a little about Mom. I think of her so often this time of year. She absolutely loved the holidays... and did everything possible to fill our home with a joyous spirit. 

What I best remember about Mom's holiday preparations is the time she spent baking Christmas cookies. Mom's birthday was December 17, and she spent her birthday week baking dozens and dozens of cookies. Mom would make two or three different types each day. I still remember the pure joy of coming home from school with my brother to freshly-baked cookies. While I didn't realize it until years later, I'm sure she saved our favorite types as the last batches she would make each day. To me, nothing will ever mean Christmas more than her homemade cookies.  

So, Mom, today's card is for you -- and will be included in the Christmas package hubby and I send to my brother and his family. Its sentiment is from a holiday decoration I found at a Pennsylvania craft store: Christmas Cookies and Holiday Hearts... That's the Way the Season Starts.

I have to confess that these cookies were quite an undertaking. I started using the outlines of Elizabeth Dulemba's coloring-book-pages cookies to cut out shapes from Distress Ink antique linen. I inked the edges to give the "cookies" a baked look. Next, I "iced the cookies" with embossing paste and sprinkled them with (red and green) glitter and (silver) embossing powder. I thought I  could handle the glitter -- which is normally banned from the menopause room for OWH reasons. However, when I  just couldn't deal with it any longer, I "sealed the cookies" with a coat of Glossy Accents. Take my word for it, these are some pretty substantial cookies -- much thicker than Mom's cookies.  :)

Hope the card brings back lots and lots of warm and fuzzy Christmas memories to my brother.

W2SB #11: Gratitude & Kindness

The Emerson quote below that Annie chose for this month's words could not have been more appropriate as we approach the holiday season.

You cannot do a kindness too soon

because you never know how soon it will be too late.

For my card, I decided to incorporate the definition of gratitude into the card design.

The definition actually made the placement of the paper/vellum-pieced medallion a little tricky. But, I think I finally got it to work out okay.

Once the medallion was placed, I felt like I needed some kind of metallic embellishment in the bottom left corner to balance it out. When I couldn't find anything from my stash that I thought would work, I decided to try making my own. So, I pressed a strip of white half-pearls in Versamark, covered the pearls with copper embossing powder, crossed my fingers and heated away. Who knew you could emboss pearls? I sure didn't!

Up Close and Personal

I'd like to explain why this quote resonated so deeply with me. This is going to get up close and personal, which is something I don't typically do -- and something you  might very well prefer to skip over. But, for those of you who decide to continue reading, I should probably issue a tissue alert -- as well as a Good Wife Season 5 spoiler alert.

Last season, the Good Wife killed off Alicia's love interest Josh in a completely unexpected act of violence. I found this remarkable for several reasons.

• Nobody -- and I mean nobody -- knew this was coming. How did the producers pull this off in this day and age of Internet leaks?!
• This plot development left Alicia struggling to remember her last conversation with Josh. What did they say to one another? What would she have wanted to say instead?

For me, this show was an example of art copying life. It's been almost 30 years since I experienced one of these heart-stopping moments. You see sometimes favorite characters are unexpectedly killed off in television shows... and sometimes moms unexpectedly die in car accidents. One minute you're hugging  your mom as she leaves your house. Minutes later you're getting one of those phone calls you pray you never get.

The accident actually happened on a rainy Christmas night. My mom, dad, and brother were leaving our home following a Norman-Rockwell-like family celebration. Perhaps the greatest Christmas gift I've ever received was the peace of mind that has come from my final words to my mom: "Thanks, Mom, for everything."

So, when Annie suggested this quote, it really resonated quite deeply with me. And, I wanted to create a thank you card for that would have been worthy of giving to my mom.

W2SB #9: To Every Thing There Is a Season

Hi, everyone.

I love the inspiration for this month's Words 2 Scrap By challenge. There are so many ways to go with this challenge. For my card, I used a 4-season interpretation to commemorate a life-change event.

Those of us in the There's Always the Other Side Stampin' Up! stamp club learned that our wonderful demonstrator (and fellow W2SB I-Teamer) is moving to Colorado. While we are thrilled for Bernadette, we are very sad for us. Thanks, Bernadette for everything. We miss you already.  :(

Hope it's been a good weekend.

I have two cards for two challenges, both inspired by the genius that is Tim Holtz. Thanks, Tim!

Card 1: A Found Relative 

The card below was inspired by the current Shopping Our Stash challenge to make a project featuring an old image or an old-school tool/technique. This challenge cried out for one of Tim's Found Relatives, who apparently holds the key to the heart of an OWH loved one.  :)

Since this was a Tim-inspired card, I only used one photo corner -- because, as Tim would say, you would expect photo corners for all corners. While I was tempted to do the same with the brads, this is a card for Operation Write Home. So, I went with brads at all four corners to secure the sentiment.

Card 2: Thanks [dot, dot, dot]

My second card was inspired by a card posted a few weeks ago by SOS' fearless Leader Leslie and by the current OWH Mid-month challenge to make a gratitude/thank you card. Thanks, Leslie, for the inspiration.  :)
